Borrowed Soldiers: Americans under British Command, 1918, describes the first time American and British soldiers fought together as a coalition force. In his new book, historian and archivist Mitchell Yockelson "follows the two divisions [of Americans] from the training camps of South Carolina to the bloody battlefields of Europe," according to the book's website. "Despite cultural differences, General Pershing's misgivings, and the contrast between American eagerness and British exhaustion, the untested Yanks benefited from the experience of battle-toughened Tommies. Their combined forces contributed much to the Allied victory" against the Germans. The author has provided some of the most evocative photographs for our slide show, as well as a close-up of a letter home from a soldier on the front lines. He talks with Prime Time Focus host Alyne Ellis about his book. download the mp3 of this feature story to your iPod or other player Play the Prime Time Focus segment with our MP3 Flash player below.
