Gordon Hempton - Seasons and Sounds

In the November/December edition of AARP The Magazine, read all about Gordon Hempton and his quest to preserve the natural quiet near his home just outside the Olympic National Park in Washington. As you watch photographs Hempton has taken in and around the park, listen to his descriptions of some of his favorite sounds by selecting segments from the audio player at your left. Learn more about each recording at the One Square Inch and Sound Tracker websites (see links at left). Does Hempton's work teach lessons about life, and about listening? He rejects the idea. “There’s nothing to learn about listening,” Gordon told the magazine's Edward Readicker-Henderson. “We’re all animals; we all know how. We’re all good listeners when we’re at our most natural.”
