They talk with Prime Time Radio host Mike Cuthbert about what they discovered as they explored the many strands of the state's incredibly diverse communities in the course of writing Under the Dragon: California's New Culture.

From the introduction by Andrew Lam: "At last count, Census 2000, there were 112 languages spoken in the Bay Area, and 80 in the thirty-square-mile city of Richmond, population one hundred thousand. On warm summer afternoons, Nob Hill, where I live, turns into the modern Tower of Babel. The languages of the world—Chinese, French, Spanish, German, Russian, Thai, Japanese, Hindi, Vietnamese, and many more I do not recognize—waft in through my open windows, accompanied by the cable cars’ merry clingclanging bells."
